Lantana Camara plant has been used in many parts of the world to treat a variety of disorders. In Asian countries, leaves and flowers are used to treat cuts, rheumatisms, ulcers and as a vermifuge. Chemical compounds isolated from extracts of leaves of L. camara are reported to exhibit antimicrobial, fungicidal, insecticidal and nematicidal activity. Various studies show and validate the several components of Lantana Camara. They exhibit antimicrobial properties namely verbacoside, 22 beta-Acetoxylantic acid, lantic acid, umuherngerin,camarinic acid and triterpenoids.2,3,4,6,7

A comparative study of the antimicrobial activity of methanol extracts of lantana camara various parts by Pour et al 2009 concluded in terms of the antiabacterial activity, the leaf extract of L. camara is the most potent part of plant followed by flower and root. Finding that 22 beta-Acetoxylantic acid isolated from L. camara demonstrated antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhi (S. typhi) .3

Verbacoside, a compound isolated from lantana extract has been demonstrated to possess anti microbial immunosuppressive and anti tumour activities. Verbascoside can be obtained in 2% yield from the leaves and branchlets. 2

Further studies by Saleh et al in 1999 from L. camara Linn. recorded the antibacterial activity of lantic acid .4 Antimicobial activities of oils of different Lantana species, umuherngerin, the first flavanoid isolated exhibited antimicrobial activity against Salmonella typhi and Staphylococcus aureus.5 Also, Camarinic acid showed antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhi.6

An investigation by Nayak 2008 of Lantana camara leaf extract in Sprague on dawley rats using a burn wound model revealed lack of wound healing activity but had antimicrobial activity. The phytochemical analysis of the leaf extract by qualitative method showed the presence of triterpenoids and absence of other constituents. The crude extract has shown antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus Aureus, Klebsiella Pneumoniae and Escherichia Coli.7

A sensitivity pattern of bacterial pathogens on L. camara (50gms/300ml) 17 % extract done by Xavier and Arun 2007 was found effectively inhibit growth both gram negative and positive bacteria including S. aureus. 8

Based on the aforementioned antimicrobial properties of Lantana camara against S. aureus, the primary etiology of impetigo, this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the plant for impetigo.
