Religion

Sister Judith sent me an email for this invitation to speak tonight, and in it she asked for my understanding on the story about David fighting the giant Goliath in which David took with him five smooth stones. The question is why did David carry with him five stones and not one? Was he trusting in God for helping him to overcome the giant? Was he lack of trust in God? Could he have just trusted fully in God and confronted Goliath with just one stone?

David certainly trusted in God in his encounter with Goliath. Look at what he told King Saul when the king wanted David to put on the king’s armour? In 1 Sam 17:39 we read that he did not depend on the armour, helmet, nor sword.

Instead, in verse 40, we read that he chose five smooth stones from the river.

In verse 45, David told Goliath, “You come to me with a sword, spear and shield, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel…this day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. The battle is the Lord’s.”

And then David put his hand into the bag, and he took one stone and it hit the Philistine on the forehead, and he fell to the ground.

Now, was David in full trust in the Lord to deliver him and the Israelites? Sure, as his action by not depending upon Saul’s armour and sword, and by his declaration to Goliath that the battle is the Lord’s.

Yet, could he have just simply approached Goliath with his bare body? How was it that he still needed a stone, not just one, but he carried with him five stones.

By using a stone, David was doing his part in the battle according to what he could do best. He was not used to Saul’s armour and sword, but he was expert in using the sling and the stone. So as he trusted in God, yet he had his part to play. If David were to try fighting the giant with his empty hands, that would be trying to tempt God. It was God’s plan to use David and the stone to smite Goliath dead. The stone was part of God’s plan, part of God’s tool, even as David was God’s instrument to overcome the giant.
